Sunday, 11 May 2025, was Mother’s Day.

Britannica says, “Mother’s Day is a holiday in honour of mothers celebrated in countries worldwide. In its modern form, the holiday originated in the United States, where it is observed on the second Sunday in May. Many other countries celebrate the holiday on this date, while some mark the observance at different times of the year. During the Middle Ages, the custom developed of allowing those who had moved away to visit their home parishes and their mothers on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent. This became Mothering Sunday in Britain, where it continued into modern times, although it has largely been replaced by Mother’s Day.”

Expressing what our mothers mean to us is difficult because of their profound influence on our lives and their crucial role in shaping us and our communities.

One of our residents at The Somerset, sent us this poem, and we thought to share it with you. Here goes:

A Mother’s Love, Forever Near

“For the hands that held us when skies were grey, for the words that gently lit our way, fo the hearts that beat with steady grace— Your love, dear mothers, time can’t erase.

To those still here, we hold you tight. Your laughter warms the coldest night. In every hug, in every smile, you make this world brighter and worthwhile.

And for the moms who’ve gone ahead, whose voices linger in what’s unsaid, We feel you still in quiet air, In blooming flowers, in whispered prayer.

You live in stories, in songs, in skies, in teardrops glistening in our eyes. Gone from sight, but ever near— In every memory, you’re here.

So, here’s to mothers, near and far, our guiding light, our northern star. With all we are and all we do, our hearts will always beat for you.”
