Meet our residents, Harry and Shirley Coetzee. They are among The Somerset’s newest residents, having moved from Westville, KwaZulu-Natal, to be closer to their daughter and grandchild in Tokai.

Harry, a retired engineer with an MBA, was the manager of Toyota’s Durban plant. A true petrolhead, he loves discussing all things automotive—especially Toyotas, though a Porsche once made its way into his garage. Interestingly, the Mazda parked at home belongs to Shirley—her first non-Toyota, but still, as Harry notes, a Japanese car. Their son’s Subaru WRX, modified with Harry’s enthusiastic input, is another favourite topic—expect conversations about fast cars and loud engines!
Harry and Shirley met in Gauteng on a blind date, though it wasn’t love at first sight. Years later, they discovered they had attended boarding schools in Polokwane simultaneously – he at the College of the Little Flower, she at Pius Convent – yet they never crossed paths.
Initially considering retiring to the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town or possibly Kalk Bay, they ultimately chose The Somerset in Somerset West.

Harry has personally built his own homes over the years, and he has nothing but praise for the exacting building standards of their new house at The Somerset – the quality of the aluminum fittings a particular standout.

Both have had recent health scares, so they were also attracted by The Somerset’s Care facility and the surrounding medical facilities and specialists.

They’re still settling in and look forward to meeting fellow residents. If you ever bump into Harry and Shirley, just mention cars—but be ready for a long discussion (bonus points if you know your Michelin from your Pirelli!).
