The Franschhoek Open Garden Festival prides itself on offering gardens catering to various preferences. From charming village gardens to stunning expansive farm gardens, they have something to suit every taste. Each year, they aim to introduce fresh and thrilling garden experiences. Ten gardens were explored in this year’s festival; one was newly showcased, five have not been on for two years or more, and four returned from last year’s exhibition.
As you know, The Somerset Lifestyle and Retirement Village in Somerset West has its very own Garden Club. Members couldn’t let this opportunity go by, so they arranged an outing for the residents to visit Franschhoek Open Gardens. One of the Garden Club members – Lorraine Nuttal, gave us feedback on this delightful outing. Lorraine writes:
“The outing to the Franschhoek Open Gardens was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A lovely drive through rows of large shady. On arrival purchased our tickets. Plants for sale were snapped up by Maddy, Elaine, Jasper, Julia and me, just enough space to fit them all into the bus.
The gardens were all amazing. We learned something from each one of them. Bagatelle De La Cotte was the best garden of all. It is not just the beauty and size, but the determination of owner Anneline, who had back surgery that went wrong, and was paralysed from the waist down. She bravely persevered and learned to walk again with the help of crutches. This expansive oasis features shimmering water elements, a formal rose garden, and a serene pond, all set against majestic mountains. Decorative walkways lead to diverse gardens, including a vibrant Spanish garden, a fynbos garden, a tranquil cottage garden, and an informal indigenous garden. Art pieces are strategically placed throughout the gardens. Each space reveals unique surprises, making this a true horticultural treasure. Gerrit, thank you for being our chauffeur and the input you gave on the gardens and plants.”
